Excuse me, I'm trying to ask the shop staff about this item, but I don't speak Japanese. Can you help me?
（すみません、この商品について店員さんに聞きたいのですが、日本語が話せません。手伝っていただけますか？）
🧑🎓【Student / Tour Guide】:
Of course. Let me explain how to communicate with local people. I'll help you with basic Japanese phrases and gestures.
（もちろんです。現地の人とのコミュニケーション方法を説明させてください。基本的な日本語フレーズとジェスチャーでお手伝いします。）

That sounds helpful. What should I say first?
（それは助かります。まず何と言えばいいですか？）

You can start with "Sumimasen" to get attention. Then point to the item and say "Kore wa ikura desu ka?" which means "How much is this?" Japanese people appreciate it when you try to use their language.
（注意を引くために「すみません」から始めることができます。それから商品を指して「これはいくらですか？」と言ってください。日本人はあなたが日本語を使おうとすることを喜びます。）

I see. What if they don't understand me?

Don't worry. Use gestures like pointing or showing numbers with your fingers. You can also write down numbers or use your phone to show pictures. Most shop staff will try their best to help you.
