(Reference again)

This is a scenario where you present specific cost reduction proposals through design changes in response to cost reduction requests from overseas customers.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Purchasing Manager】:
Thank you for coming today. We need to discuss cost reduction for the new component design. Our budget is tight this year, and we're looking for at least a 15 percent reduction.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Design Engineer】:
I understand your situation. Let me explain our cost reduction plan. First, we will change the material from stainless steel to aluminum alloy. Second, we will simplify the shape to reduce machining time. Third, we will increase the order quantity to lower the unit price.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Purchasing Manager】:
That sounds promising. But will the aluminum alloy maintain the same strength and durability? We can't accept any quality issues.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Design Engineer】:
Yes, we confirmed the strength with our test results. The new alloy has 95 percent of the original strength, which is enough for your application. We also tested it for 1000 hours under high temperature conditions.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Purchasing Manager】:
I see. What about the cost? Can you show me the numbers? We need to see exactly how much we can save.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Design Engineer】:
Of course. The current unit price is 50 USD. With the material change, we can reduce it to 45 USD. With the simplified design, it will go down to 42 USD. If you increase the order from 500 to 1000 units, the final price will be 40 USD. That's a 20 percent reduction.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Purchasing Manager】:
The 20 percent reduction is better than our target. However, doubling the order quantity is a concern. We need to check our storage capacity first.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Design Engineer】:
I understand. We can offer a flexible delivery schedule. We will ship 250 units every 3 months instead of all at once. This way, you don't need extra storage space. The unit price will remain 40 USD.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Purchasing Manager】:
That's a good solution. When can you start production with the new design? We need the first batch by the end of next quarter.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Design Engineer】:
We can start right away after your approval. The lead time is 8 weeks, so we will deliver the first 250 units by the end of next quarter. We just need your final confirmation on the material and quantity.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Purchasing Manager】:
Excellent. I'll discuss this with my team and get back to you by the end of this week. Your proposal meets our needs very well.
