(Reference again)

A foreign passenger shows interest in Japanese in-flight meals, asking about dish names, ingredients, and proper eating etiquette.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Passenger】:
Excuse me, I'm very interested in this Japanese meal. Could you tell me what this dish is called?
🧑‍🎓【Student / Cabin Attendant】:
Certainly! This is called "Teriyaki Chicken with Rice." It consists of grilled chicken with a sweet soy-based sauce, steamed rice, and seasonal vegetables. The sauce is made from soy sauce, sugar, and mirin, which is a type of Japanese cooking wine.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Passenger】:
That sounds delicious! I see chopsticks here. Could you demonstrate how to use them properly? I'm not very familiar with them.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Cabin Attendant】:
Of course. Let me demonstrate the basic technique. Hold one chopstick like a pencil between your thumb and index finger, and rest the other one on your ring finger. Move only the top chopstick to pick up food. It's important not to point chopsticks at people or stick them upright in rice, as these actions are considered impolite in Japanese culture.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Passenger】:
Thank you for explaining that! Are there any other Japanese dining manners I should be aware of? I want to be respectful.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Cabin Attendant】:
I appreciate your consideration. In Japan, it's polite to say "itadakimasu" before eating and "gochisousama" after finishing your meal. Also, it's acceptable to lift your rice bowl close to your mouth when eating. You can make a slight slurping sound when eating noodles, as it shows you're enjoying the food. These customs enhance your dining experience and demonstrate respect for Japanese culture.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Passenger】:
This is fascinating! One more question — does this teriyaki dish have any special cultural background? I'd love to know more about it.
🧑‍🎓【Student / Cabin Attendant】:
Absolutely. Teriyaki is a traditional Japanese cooking method that dates back several centuries. The term "teriyaki" consists of "teri," meaning luster, and "yaki," meaning grilled. This technique was developed to preserve fish and meat before refrigeration existed. The sweet glaze not only enhances the flavor but also creates a beautiful glossy appearance. Today, teriyaki has evolved into one of Japan's most recognized culinary exports worldwide.

👨‍💼【Teacher / Passenger】:
Thank you so much for all this wonderful information! You've made this flight experience truly memorable. I'll enjoy this meal with a much deeper appreciation now.
